The popping candy of memories – Salamanca.


So many memories from last year’s bike ride still flit into my head time to time. They flash like popping candy. From the sometimes mundane scene of endless deserted tarmac – there was some – to getting lost and found again – to the absolutely delightful surprises of the trip.

One city buried itself into my heart like no other. I didn’t have any control. I didn’t know what to expect. It just did. And I can’t wait to go back. Salamanca.

I rode into Salamanca on a hot afternoon with the outer roads quickly getting quite busy. By now I was used to dismounting and wheeling my bike into the centre. It was often easier, and it was also nice to get out of the saddle and take my time walking. I enjoyed the “slow reveal”. Following the directions on my Garmin, I had little inkling from the direction from which I came. I walked up the steps …………

You will find all you need to know about Salamanca’s colourful and chequered past on Wiki, of course, so I won’t trot it out here. Just come for a stroll around one of Spain’s most beautiful cities. Dodge in and out of the sun, wonder at the history, look up at the buildings, add it to your “must see” list.
